So just yesterday, I watched a commercial from Shea Moisture that was posted via social media and it rubbed me all kinda wrong. My first thought after watching was, “Now Shea Moisture know they’re wrong for this one.” Many natural hair ladies (including myself) felt that the ad was disrespectful to the Natural Hair Movement…to say the least. The ad focused on women discussing their “hair struggles” but not one of the women in the commercial had kinky coily type 4 hair. Actually, only one woman had curly hair…waist-length loose curls. The other women were Caucasian with very straight hair.
Anyway, the ad missed the mark completely. In my opinion, it appeared to erase the very women whose hair struggles and subsequent support, helped Shea Moisture succeed in its beginning stage. I kinda understand what Shea Moisture was trying to do. They wanted to expand their brand’s market to include women who may not have normally considered these particular products as something they would personally use. They wanted to market towards Caucasian women…but somehow, they also felt that their base supporters needed to sit this one out. This was a huge mistake on their part. Shea Moisture has since apologized. But honestly, I’ve already begun looking for other natural hair products to try.
