Meet Our January CurlFriend

1. What’s your name and where are you from?

My name is Kimberley Tuller. I was born in Kingston, Jamaica and currently live in Drexel Hill, a suburb of Philadelphia, PA.

2. How long have you been natural? Why did you decide to begin your natural hair journey? And did you Big Chop or Transition?

I transitioned twice. The first time was from a relaxer back in 2010, then again from heat damage in 2013. The first time around I really didn’t know what I was doing. I’ve been completely natural and heat damage-free since October 2015. I transitioned both times and chopped once I got to a length I was comfortable with. I originally started my journey because I noticed my hair was breaking off and I attributed that to the relaxer. I transitioned the second time because I noticed that my hair became thin and lifeless even though I didn’t have a relaxer, and I realized it was due to the overuse of heat.

3. Who is your hair crush/hair inspiration?

My favorite Natural Hair YouTube Page is Green Beauty Channel. She breaks down the science behind the different types of natural hair and the best ways to take care of your hair’s specific needs. I recommend this page to every natural I know. As far as crush, I’m my own crush! I can’t be lusting after hair I’ll never have. I can look to others for tips and inspiration but I don’t desire anything more or less than what’s growing out my very own head!

4. What is your go-to hair style?

Pineapple for the win! When my “outs” (braid-outs, twist-outs, etc.) and sets come out looking suspicious, I don’t mumble and complain. I brush that bad boy up into a pineapple, lay my edges, slap on some earrings and voila…I’m poppin again!

5. What is the one product that you cannot live without? Why?

Apple Cider Vinegar! It’s literally Bae and we ain’t finna break up no time soon. Till death do us part. I literally use it for everything; to cleanse my scalp when I’m co-washing, to close my cuticles after rinsing out my deep conditioner. I drink it first thing in the morning too to balance my ph levels. I cook with it sometimes. I even use it as a feminine hygiene product. I looooove the stuff!

6. What advice would you give to a CurlFriend who has just begun her natural hair journey?

I would say have patience during the process and try to enjoy it. A natural hair journey can be one of the most rewarding experiences ever, but also one of the most stressful. Also, soak up as much knowledge as possible to avoid pitfalls. Read books instead of watching too many videos because everyone’s hair is different. Don’t fall in love with someone else’s head of hair, then get frustrated when you style your hair the exact same way and get a different result. The goal is to ultimately know, understand, and fall in love with your own, unique, God-given head of hair, not to try to get your hair to look or behave like anyone else’s.

7. How can we connect with you? (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and/or any other social media outlet that you would like to share)

You can find me on Instagram @Kimperfection2020 and Twitter @Kimperfection90
