Meet Our June FiberFriend Thao713

1. What is your name and where are you from?

Hello!  I’m Thao and I am based in Portland, Oregon.

2. What is your craft? How long have you been crafting? And how did you learn?

I’m a knitter and I’ve been knitting for 10 years.  My mom taught me how to knit when I was young but didn’t pick it up until I move to Portland 10 years ago.  I moved here for work after graduating business school.  I didn’t know anyone, but had some time before the job started.  I thought it would be fun to pick up knitting and meet people along the way.

I didn’t know at the time, but it turns out Portland is full of knitters and yarn shops!  I consider myself lucky to be part of such a wonderful and vibrant crafting community.

3. What is your favorite project?

I love knitting baby projects because they are quick and highly satisfying.  All of Carina Spencer’s baby sweaters and rompers are fantastic and fit well.  As for adult projects, I’m drawn to the modern clean aesthetic so choose projects that lean that way.  My fave designer for adult-wear is Heidi Kerrmaier for her excellent sweater construction.

4. Who is your crafting inspiration?

I’d say Brooklyn Tweed.  But I’m also inspired by nature and feel my color palette changes as the season changes.

5. What advice would you give a crafter who has just begun her crafting journey?

I would say to just start.  It is always overwhelming to start something new and feel inexperienced.  I would suggest going to local knit nights at your local yarn store.  Knitters are super helpful and we’re always trying to convert you to be one of us. 😉

6. How can we connect with you?

You can catch me on the ‘Gram at thao713 or my business handle nerdbirdmakery.  I also have a shop, which is I started this business to offer inclusive products to crafters – it’s mostly knitting relating thing at this point.  Representation matters and I gotta say I’m thrilled by the unexpected, but wonderful outcome of meeting so may knitters of colors when I started this venture.  It’s truly wonderful and makes me love knitting even more.

Thank You Thao!
