Meet Our January CurlFriend

1. What’s your name and where are you from?
My name is Chloé and  I’m from London but my family is from St. Lucia and Jamaica. When I was choosing my Instagram handle, I just wanted to keep it simple so people would know who I am. Chloe was taken so CurlyGalChlo was my next choice – it’s surprising how many people address me as “Curly” or “Curlygal” in emails and DMs!

2. How long have you been natural? Why did you decide to begin your natural hair journey? And did you Big Chop or Transition?

I have never relaxed my hair but I made the conscious decision to start taking better care of my hair in 2012 after losing my edges to a flat iron. I didn’t enjoy having straight hair and always wore it in a bun and out of my face anyway so ditching the heat wasn’t a tough sacrifice to make for healthy hair, and I haven’t looked back since! I transitioned very slowly, learning how to care for my hair and getting trims every so often. Returning back to my kinky, coily hair texture was all about embracing my version of beauty in direct defiance of the European standards I had grown up with. I did so, passionately and unapologetically. And I still do.

3. Who is your hair crush/hair inspiration?

I think I owe the health of my hair largely to Whitney/Naptural85 and she has been an inspiration for me for so long. But the further I go with my journey, the more I feel myself carving my own path more and loving my hair for what it is rather than hoping to have hair like someone else.

4. What is your go-to hair style?

My go-to style will always be twists. I can style them how I like and make them as mini or as chunky as I like.

5. What is the one product that you cannot live without? Why?

I’m tempted to say water because on weekends away and overnight stays where I haven’t had access to my stash, water has got me through! Or rhassoul clay because it’s a cleanser and conditioner in one. But if I were to pick an actual product I’ve purchased and repurchased time and time again, I’d have to say Bourn Beautiful Naturals Curling Custard – it’s from a black owned brand, it’s completely natural and it never lets me down.

6. What advice would you give to a Curlfriend who has just begun her natural hair journey?

My advice to any new naturals would be to listen to what your hair wants and needs. It’s easy to get caught up in a YouTube frenzy and blindly follow someone else but nothing beats research, trial and error. Keep it simple and find out what works for you. After that, keep it up! Consistency is key.

7. How can we connect with you?

You can always find me on Instagram. It’s where I’m most active and responsive. If not, come hang out with me over on Facebook and YouTube too – @curlygalchlo
I’m working on a few new things this year. Some have to stay under wraps for now but I’m excited to share some more DIY recipes with you all and I’ll be sharing more black owned brands too!
Best wishes

Thanks for sharing Chloé!
