Meet Our April CurlFriend

1.    What’s your name and where are you from?

Hi, I’m Scarlett Rocourt and I am a Haitian-born Jersey Girl!

2. How long have you been natural? Why did you decide to begin your natural hair journey? And did you Big Chop or Transition?

I went natural back in 1998, right after graduating from college. I made the decision to stop relaxing my hair after reading an article in Essence Magazine by a woman who discussed her going natural as a lawyer in Corporate America.

I always hated getting my hair relaxed, but up until reading that article, I didn’t even think I had another option with my hair. It was like a lightbulb went off and I told my stylist at the time that I wanted to go natural.

My stylist and I decided to do the big chop. I already had a chin length bob, so for 6 months, I didn’t relax my hair. And the day came, she cut off all the straight parts of my hair and I was left with less than an inch of curls. I never felt more free.

3. Who is your hair crush/hair inspiration?

I have been natural for so long that I don’t have any hair crush or inspiration. I guess you can say I’m an ‘old G’ now. I wear my hair in almost the same way, a wash-n-go. It’s either down or in a bun.

I love seeing other women with their natural hair in the streets. We are like this silent sisterhood who would acknowledge each other when we’d cross paths.

4. What is your go-to hair style?

As mentioned before, I’m a wash-n-go girl, although we all know you don’t just wash-n-go. I also do dry braid-outs once my hair needs refreshing and I’m not ready to go through the whole wash day process.

5. What is the one product that you cannot live without? Why?

Only one! I need my moisturizer and my styler combo. But, if I was in a zombie apocalypse and could only have one product in my bag, it would be my Sealing Hair Butter.

The Sealing Hair Butter really keeps my hair hydrated for several days by sealing in the moisture. My hair is also soft without feeling heavy or greasy. It’s the one product I use most often and combined with my other products.

6. What advice would you give to a Curlfriend who has just begun her natural hair journey?

Love your hair. After my first big chop and my hair started to grow, I was afraid because my hair is so thick and I had no idea what I was doing. I thought that if only my curls were looser, then my life would be easier.

Once I started to understand my hair, and to love it the way it grows out of my head, then I let go of this idea that my hair would be better if… And now that I’m older, my diet has changed (I’m now a plant-based vegan) and I don’t color my hair, I have noticed that my hair has changed, so I’m relearning it all over again.

We tend to look at someone who is further along in her hair journey and wish we could be there too. I bet you that where you are now, she was once and felt the same frustrations, I know I did.
