1. What is your name and where are you from?
My name is Comeisha a.k.a. ShadowQueen and I am from Trenton, NJ and I am the owner/operator of ShadowQueen Accessories.
2. Describe ShadowQueen Accessories:
ShadowQueen Accessories is an online shop that specializes in handcrafted Afrocentric accessories. I started in 2017 just making personal items for myself and over time grew my love for creating into a business.
My specialties include Anakara wrapped earrings and headwraps. I also feature a variety of seasonal items throughout the year such as personalized holiday ornaments and Black History themed drink coasters.
3. Who are your biggest influences?
My Mother Jackie has been my biggest creative influence. She is a talented seamstress and she has always supported my creativity and artistic expression. As a child I remember just being so amazed and impressed by her creations. She is a very visual person who can create an item of clothing without even using a pattern. I am like her in that way. If I see something crafty I can probably figure out how to make it.
4. What is your favorite work that you’ve produced/worked on so far?
I am big crafter and love creating new things. I’ve designed and created custom coffee mugs, tshirts, bling tumblers, and even custom rolling trays (for those who indulge LOL). But if I had to choose and narrow it down to just one thing, I would have to choose bamboo (hoop) earrings. Wrapping them in different fabrics is definitely my favorite! I am an 80’s baby who grew up in the 90’s and bamboo (hoop) earrings are just so nostalgic for me. They remind me of early Mary J. and those feel good 90’s vibes. They are a timeless, classic, cultural staple and I love to celebrate that by keeping them in my shop year round. I wear them large and extra large but I do offer multiple size options.
5. What does your work aim to say?
My work is an extension of myself. It says, “I am bold. I am beautiful. I am black. I am proud.” I want my customers to feel that way everytime they wear their SQA pieces.
I love it when my customers message me to tell me how much they love their items. That really makes my heart smile.
6. If you could tell your younger self anything, what would it be?
If I could tell my younger self one thing it would be, “Don’t wait for the right time. It doesn’t exist.”
