Celebrate Juneteenth with a Good Book

A great way to celebrate Juneteenth is by buying and reading books by African American authors. The following are some of my favorite authors:

🖤Octavia Butler

🖤Alice Walker

🖤Zora Neale Hurston

🖤Maya Angelou

Maya Angelou
Author of I Know Why the Caged Bird Songs, Wouldn’t Take Nothing For My Journey Now, and more

🖤Toni Morrison

Toni Morrison

🖤N. K. Jemisin

🖤Tananarive Due

Tananarive Due

While is it important to read nonfiction books to inform yourself about race and race relations, I believe that it is also important to read a bit of fiction as well. Reading stories in which Black people are allowed to just be…live and love without race as a predominant factor is important to me.

I love reading books by the authors I listed above because they have each created a world where Black people, Black Women in particular, are acknowledged and centered. This is not usually the case with regards to most fictional works; specifically science fiction and fantasy stories.
